Paste a DNA template strand to get the mRNA transcript, codon-by-codon table, amino acid chain and GC content — runs fully in your browser.
Type a DNA template strand — for example TACGGGCATGTCGCAACT — and this tool reads every triplet as a template codon, produces the complementary mRNA strand (5′ → 3′), looks each codon up in the standard genetic code table, and returns the full amino acid chain alongside the GC content percentage. The sequence runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Spaces, line breaks and position numbers are stripped automatically, so you can paste straight from a textbook, a FASTA file or a lab printout without cleaning it by hand.
The tool opens on TACGGGCATGTCGCAACT, an 18 nt template strand with a GC content of 33.3%. Reading it 3′ → 5′ and producing the complementary mRNA gives 5′-AUGCCCGUACAGCGUUGA-3′. That breaks into six codons:
AUG → Met (start codon, marked ★ in the table)CCC → ProGUA → ValCAG → GlnCGU → ArgUGA → Stop (marked ■)The Amino Acid Chain tab shows Met-Pro-Val-Gln-Arg-Stop and coloured chips for each residue. Load Sample cycles through four more sequences that exercise GC-rich segments, internal stop codons and AT-rich stretches.
Transcription reads the template strand in the 3′ → 5′ direction and replaces each base with its RNA complement: A → U, T → A, G → C, C → G. The result is the mRNA strand, read 5′ → 3′. Translation then groups the mRNA into codons of three, looks each codon up in the standard (NCBI table 1) genetic code, and maps it to one of 20 amino acids or a stop signal.
GC content is measured on the mRNA strand. Because G–C base pairs form three hydrogen bonds versus two for A–U, a higher GC percentage indicates a more thermally stable sequence. Typical coding sequences fall between 40% and 60% GC; the extremophile Deinococcus radiodurans reaches 67%.
The tool accepts sequences up to 10,000 nucleotides. Sequences whose length is not a multiple of 3 have leftover nucleotides after the last complete codon; a note below the mRNA output states how many were not translated. A sequence with no AUG codon produces a chain without a start codon: the Amino Acid Chain tab flags this as a possible UTR or fragment rather than an error, because frameshifts and 5′ UTRs are valid biology. The non-obvious detail is that the validation message reads “"X" is not a valid DNA nucleotide. Use A, T, G and C only.” quoting the first offending character, so RNA sequences (U), ambiguous IUPAC codes (N, R, Y) and accidental spaces that survived a paste are each caught with a specific, actionable message.
Read 3′ → 5′. The tool produces the complementary mRNA strand 5′ → 3′. Spaces and numbers are stripped automatically.
