Convert map distance to ground distance at any 1 : N scale, or find the scale from a measured pair, with a verbal scale, area scale and scale bar.
A scale of 1 : 25,000 means one of anything on the map is 25,000 of the same thing on the ground. That is easy to say and fiddly to use, because you measure the map in centimetres or inches and want the answer in kilometres, feet or miles. This Map Scale Calculator does the unit juggling and works in three directions: map to ground, ground to map, or the scale itself from a distance you measured on paper and one you know on the ground.
The tool opens on 1 : 25000 with 4.2 cm measured on the map:
Further presses of Load Sample plot 3 km onto a 1 : 50,000 sheet (6 cm), find the scale from 8 cm covering 2 km (1 : 25,000), and read 2.5 in on a USGS 1 : 24,000 quad, where 1 in is exactly 2,000 ft.
Both distances are turned into metres first, so the units cancel. Ground = map × N, map = ground ÷ N, and N = ground ÷ map. Areas grow by N², not N, which is why halving the scale number from 1 : 50,000 to 1 : 25,000 cuts the land under each square centimetre from 25 hectares to 6.25. The scale bar picks a round ground length of 1, 2 or 5 times a power of ten that prints closest to 4 cm, so on a 1 : 1,250 plan it suggests 50 m.
Switching modes carries the answer across. Work out a ground distance, press Find the scale, and the box that was computed becomes an input already holding that number.
The scale box reads 25000, 25,000, 1:25000, 1 : 25 000 and 1/25000 as the same thing. A blank or zero map distance stops with “Map distance must be greater than 0. Measure it with a ruler on the printed map.” If a ground distance comes out shorter than the map distance, such as 5 cm against 1 cm, the tool refuses rather than print a scale below 1 : 1, since that is an enlargement and almost always a unit mix-up.
The result is only as good as the paper. A map copied at 90% or shown on a screen no longer matches its printed 1 : N, while a scale bar shrinks and grows with the image and stays right. Projections also stretch scale away from their centre lines, from −0.04% to about +0.1% across a UTM zone, which matters for survey work but not for planning a walk.

Scale bar for this map
Print the bar 4 cm long and label its end 1 km. A scale bar stays right when the map is enlarged or shrunk; a written 1 : N does not.
Ground = map × N. N = ground ÷ map, both in the same unit. Areas scale by N², so halving the scale number quarters the ground area per square centimetre.
