GPA Calculator — Weighted & Cumulative

Your transcript says B+ in a 3-credit class and A- in a 4-credit one, but the registrar only reports one number. This GPA Calculator rebuilds that number the way most US schools do: each grade becomes grade points, each course is weighted by its credits, and the total is divided by the credits that count.

Grades can be letters or percentages. Type 91 and the row reads 91% → A- before it is used. You get three answers side by side: the term GPA, a weighted GPA that rewards Honors and AP work, and a cumulative GPA once you add the record you already have.

Worked Example: A Five-Course First Semester

The calculator opens on this term, with a 3.40 already earned over 30 credits:

• Calculus I | A- | 4 | regular → 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 points
• English Composition | B+ | 3 → 9.9 points
• General Chemistry | B | 4 → 12.0 points
• Chemistry Lab | A | 1 and Intro to Psychology | A | 3 → 4.0 and 12.0 points

That is 52.7 quality points over 15 credits, a Term GPA of 3.51. Folding in the earlier 102 points (3.40 × 30) gives 154.7 over 45 credits, so the Cumulative GPA is 3.44. How the Math Weights Credits and Boosts

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σcredits. On the default scale A+ and A are both 4.0; switch to 4.3 and A+ alone moves to 4.3. Percentages map with the common cut-offs: 93 for an A, 90 for an A-, 87 for a B+ and so on down to 60 for a D-. Anything under 60 is an F.

The weighted column adds 0.5 per credit for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A- in AP Biology counts 4.7 there. A failing grade gets no boost. Results are rounded half up to two places, and the smaller line under the term and cumulative figures shows three, which is where 3.513 becomes the 3.51 on the card.

Edge Cases: Pass, Withdrawn and Out-of-Range Grades

P, W, I and NC are accepted and listed under “Left out of the GPA”, because a pass or a withdrawal carries no grade points. Anything else unreadable stops the calculation with a message naming the row, such as “Row 3: "B++" is not a grade. Use a letter from A+ to F, a percentage from 0 to 100, or P / W for courses left out of the GPA.” Credits must be above 0 and at most 20, and a previous GPA above the chosen scale is refused.
