Speed, distance and time are three numbers that always travel together. Know any two and the third follows directly from the same relationship: distance equals speed multiplied by time. Speed Distance Time Calculator makes that arithmetic instant. Pick which value you want to find, fill in the other two, and the answer appears before you reach the equal sign.

Seven speed units, seven distance units and three time units cover every practical scenario. A road trip planner works in miles and hours; a track athlete works in metres and seconds; a maritime chart works in knots and nautical miles. All three live in the same tool and the result panel converts the answer into every other unit simultaneously, so you never need to do a second conversion.

Worked Example: Highway Drive

Press Load Sample and the tool loads 100 km/h and 350 km with Solve for: Time selected. The result is 3.5 hours, shown in the result panel and echoed in the full conversion table as 210 minutes and 12,600 seconds. Hit Load Sample a second time and it switches to a runner scenario: 8 mph for 45 minutes solves to 6 miles.

The Solve for selector at the top determines which field is the unknown. Switching it clears the corresponding input and disables it with a grey placeholder so the layout always shows two editable inputs and one locked result slot. Changing the selector does not erase the other two fields.

The Formula and Its Three Rearrangements

All calculations use a single base unit internally (metres per second for speed, metres for distance, seconds for time) so the arithmetic is exact regardless of which unit combination you pick. Each input value is first converted to SI, the formula is applied, and the result is converted back to the unit you selected.

  • Solve for Time: t = d ÷ s
  • Solve for Distance: d = s × t
  • Solve for Speed: s = d ÷ t

When the result is a time, the panel also shows it broken into hours, minutes and seconds. For example, 3.5 hours is also 3 h 30 min 0 s, which is the form most people actually need for trip planning or scheduling.

Precision and Boundary Conditions

  • Results use up to 6 significant figures with trailing zeros trimmed, so 3.50000 displays as 3.5 while 213.610 keeps all its digits.
  • Speed and distance must each be greater than 0. A zero speed would require infinite time, and the tool shows “Speed must be a positive number.” before you finish typing.
  • There is no upper cap on any value. A value of 1 km/s over 1 year produces a valid astronomical distance.
  • Negative inputs are treated as invalid. The formula assumes non-negative physical quantities.
