Most screen recorders want an install, an account, or a watermark across the finished video. This Online Screen Recorder uses the capture and recording features already built into desktop browsers, so the video is assembled in the tab and saved straight to your downloads folder.

You can record a whole screen, a single window or one browser tab, with that tab’s sound, your microphone, or both mixed into one track. Pause and resume as often as you like; paused time is left out of the file.

Getting a Clean Recording, Step by Step

  1. Choose MP4 or WebM, a Quality level and 30 or 60 fps.
  2. Tick System / tab audio for sound from the page, and Microphone narration to talk over it.
  3. Press Start Recording and pick what to share in the browser’s own dialog.
  4. Use the 3-second countdown to switch to the window you are recording, then Pause or Stop when done.
  5. Watch the preview and press Download; the file is named with the date and time, such as screen-recording-2026-10-02_14-05-09.mp4.

You don’t have to come back to this tab to finish. Clicking Stop sharing in the browser’s own sharing bar ends the recording too, and the result is ready when you return.

File Size per Minute at Each Quality Level

  • Standard targets 2.5 Mbps of video, about 18.75 MB per minute
  • High targets 5 Mbps, about 37.5 MB per minute
  • Maximum targets 8 Mbps, about 60 MB per minute

Audio adds 128 kbps, under 1 MB a minute. These are encoder targets, so a static slide deck comes out smaller than scrolling or video playback. The recording is held in the tab’s memory in one-second pieces until you download it, and the live counter beside the timer shows how big it has grown. Long recordings at Maximum are best kept to a machine with plenty of free RAM.

Supported Formats and Where Sound Comes From

The format buttons only enable what this browser’s recorder can write. Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari can produce MP4; Firefox writes WebM. WebM files from a browser recorder usually carry no duration in their header, so some players show 0:00 or cannot seek until the file is re-saved.

Most browsers share sound only from a browser tab, or from the whole screen on Windows and ChromeOS. When none arrives you are told, and the recording continues silently rather than failing. Phones and tablets don’t let web pages capture the screen at all. If you close the picker without choosing, the message reads “Screen sharing was cancelled or blocked. Press Start Recording again and choose a screen, window or tab in the browser's picker.”

Frame rate

High targets 5 Mbps of video, about 37.5 MB per minute plus 128 kbps of audio. Busy, fast-moving screens land near the target; a still slide uses less.

Live preview, muted so it doesn't echo. Ending the share from the browser's own bar also stops the recording.

Press Start Recording and pick a screen, window or browser tab. Nothing is uploaded: the video is assembled in this tab and saved straight to your downloads.
