You have a logo, a screenshot of a website you like, or a photo of a painted wall, and you need the exact colour code. Open the image here, click the spot, and read it as HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV, CMYK or modern CSS. The image is drawn in your browser and never uploaded.

Until you add a picture, the tool shows a demo spectrum of every hue from light to dark, with a grey strip underneath, so you can try it straight away.

How to Use the Picker and Magnifier

  1. Press Open image, drop a file onto the tool, or copy an image and press Ctrl+V anywhere on the page.
  2. Move over the image. The magnifier shows the 11 × 11 pixels around the cursor, and the swatch shows the colour underneath.
  3. Click to pick. The colour appears in every format, each with its own copy button, and joins Your palette.
  4. Copy the palette as a HEX list, CSS custom properties, a JSON array or a Tailwind colors block.

Two things are easy to miss. Click the image and the arrow keys move the pick point one pixel at a time (ten with Shift), with Enter adding the colour, which helps on a one-pixel border. In Chrome and Edge, Pick from screen turns the cursor into a system eyedropper that can read any colour on your display, not just inside this page.

Accuracy: One Pixel or an Average

Colours are read from the original image at full resolution, even when it is shown smaller on screen. One pixel is exact, but photos are noisy and JPEG compression blurs edges, so 3 × 3 average and 5 × 5 average give the colour you see rather than one stray pixel. The average is weighted by transparency: a fully transparent neighbour is ignored instead of pulling the result towards black. Clicking a completely transparent area says “That spot is fully transparent, so it has no colour to pick.” Part-transparent colours come out with an alpha value, such as #ff000080.

Format Notes: HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK

This site’s terracotta reads as #ff7a59, rgb(255, 122, 89) and hsl(12, 100%, 67%). HSV (also called HSB) is the model Photoshop’s picker uses. CMYK is a plain device conversion with no colour profile, good for a ballpark but not for sending to a printer, which needs its own profile. The palette keeps up to 24 colours, newest first, and is remembered for your next visit; the image itself is not.
