Countdown Timer & Days Until Calculator

Pick a date, load the sample event (a product launch set for 14 November 2026 at 09:00), and four digits start counting down in days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating every second. The Countdown Timer and Days Until tool handles both the real-time version (you want to know exactly how many seconds until the 09:00 launch) and the planning version (you want to know it is 89 days away so you can fit a sprint inside it). Both answers come from the same input.

Setting a target time is optional. Leave the time field blank and the tool counts to 23:59:59 of that calendar day in your local time, so a deadline of “December 31” ticks down to the very last second of your year, not to midnight two days before. The five preset chips cover the most common planning horizons: Today, Tomorrow, End of Month, End of Year, and +30 days. Use them to skip the calendar for quick estimates.

Getting Your First Countdown

1. Type an optional Event name. It appears as the countdown's title and travels inside the copied result string. Leave it blank and the header reads Countdown.
2. Set the Target date. Use the date picker, type a YYYY-MM-DD value directly, or press one of the five preset chips.
3. Optionally fill in a Target time on a 24-hour clock. Without it the countdown ends at 23:59:59 local time on that date.
4. The four-digit display updates immediately and ticks every second. The summary bar shows the same distance as total hours and total minutes for scheduling calculations.
5. Press Copy to copy a compact one-line summary such as Product Launch v3.0: 89d 14h 22m 07s away, ready to paste into a message or a planning doc.

How the Math and Time Zones Work

All subtraction runs on UTC milliseconds, so a daylight-saving transition never silently adds or removes an hour from your countdown. When you leave the time field blank, the tool converts 23:59:59 of the chosen date in your browser's local time to UTC before subtracting. This means two visitors in different time zones see slightly different hour and minute values from the same event, because their day boundaries differ. The calendar days figure in the summary bar shows the raw date difference without any time-zone adjustment, making it the right number to cite when scheduling across zones.

Past Dates and Edge Cases

• Entering a past date does not produce an error. The display switches to an elapsed-time readout such as this event was 12 days, 03h 44m ago, so the tool doubles as an “it's been X days since” counter.
• The Today preset counts to 23:59:59 tonight, not to now, so it shows the remaining hours of the current day rather than flipping negative the moment you load it.
• Dates beyond the year 9999 are not accepted. The date field's maximum is the last representable UTC date, and anything larger returns an invalid result rather than a silently wrong one.
• The countdown does not persist after a page reload. It is a live session tool; if you need a permanent page with a shared link, that is a different use case than this tool covers.
