Typing a Markdown table by hand means counting pipes and dashes. A LaTeX one means remembering that every ampersand separates a cell and every percent sign starts a comment. Here you fill in a grid like a spreadsheet and copy the finished code in whichever of five formats you need: Markdown, HTML, LaTeX, an ASCII box table or CSV.

The grid opens with a small service-latency table whose first data row reads “1, checkout-api, 210, 0.0002, eu-west”, so every format has something to show before you type a thing.

How to Use the Grid Editor

  1. Type into the cells. Enter moves down a row and adds a new one when you are on the last; the arrow keys move up and down.
  2. Use + Row, + Column and the × buttons to change the shape, and the three alignment icons above each column to set left, centre or right.
  3. Pick an output format. Markdown can line its columns up with spaces; HTML and LaTeX take an optional caption; LaTeX can use booktabs rules.
  4. Press Copy or Download. The preview underneath shows how the table will look.

The fastest way in is easy to miss: copy a block of cells in Excel or Google Sheets and paste it into any box in the grid. It fills from that cell rightwards and down, adding rows and columns as needed. Import replaces the whole grid from CSV, TSV or an existing Markdown table, keeping the Markdown alignment colons, and right-aligns any column whose cells are all numbers. Pressing it with nothing pasted says “Paste a table first: CSV, TSV from a spreadsheet, or a Markdown table.” Transposeswaps rows and columns.

Format Notes: Escaping in Markdown, HTML and LaTeX

Each format gets its own escaping. A pipe inside a Markdown cell is written as \| and a line break as <br>. HTML turns <, >, & and quotes into entities and puts alignment in a text-align style. LaTeX escapes the ten characters it reserves, so p99_ms becomes p99\_ms and 50% becomes 50\%; the booktabs option needs \usepackage{booktabs} in your preamble. Markdown has no headerless tables, so switching off the header row writes an empty one above your data. CSV output quotes any cell that holds a comma, a quote or a line break, and doubles the quotes inside.

How Big a Table Can Get

The grid holds up to 50 columns and 500 rows. A paste or import larger than that keeps the top-left part and says so. Column widths in the Markdown and ASCII output count Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and emoji as two columns wide, so the borders still line up in a monospaced editor. The table, its alignment and your format choices are saved in this browser and come back when you return.

5 rows × 5 columns. Paste a block of cells into any box to fill the grid from there; Enter moves down a row and adds one at the bottom.
